A long time ago, 1999, to be exact, I had a vision. I was leaving my yoga studio that was fairly new at that time. We were located on the third floor of a large old warehouse building that had it’s share of challenges. We joked that the first workout was just getting up the stairs. We had a freight elevator, which was like something out of a horror movie. Ah the challenges of space for yoga an our other contemplative arts. Back to the story.
I was coming out of the studio and headed down the stairs - in a hurry to pick up my children from Montessori School. I hit the first step and I almost fell over the long flight of stairs, with a jolt I grabbed onto the railing and went down hard on my knees. Knowing that I have a wolf as an animal guide (I know, that is a story for another day) I sat down and immediately turned my attention inward. I asked, “what am I not paying attention to, what is it that you want me to know.” In a flash I saw yoga at the core of the University/Education System, that yoga belonged in the core teachings for architects, accountants, nurses, doctors, lawyers, engineers and more. As I saw this unfolding like a golden sphere in the centre of a wheel with spokes leading out to each discipline I asked, “what does this have to do with me, I just opened a yoga studio, that was a big challenge with two children and a third on the way.” I listened, I heard, “you are part of the larger picture of bringing yoga into the higher education system.” My immediate thought was, how on earth could I do that. I did not have advanced degree, my degrees were at the undergraduate level and my certifications were many but diverse and not even in one lineage of yoga. So, I asked, “How am I supposed to do that?” Well the story that unfolded that day became the reality of my life, on so many levels it would take a small book to tell you all about it. For the purpose of this little bit of news, let it be enough to say that I have been guided on multiple occasions to bring Kundalini yoga as well as other forms and styles of yoga into the academic arena.
If you are still with me here. One of the pieces of information that I received that day was that I was to learn more about Yogi Bhajan and his work. While pursuing teaching at Wildrid Laurier and studying at the Master’s level with the now retired, Professor Kay Koppedrayer, I learned much about Sikhism, kundalini yoga and Yogi Bhajan. After many workshops and training, I am of the opinion that Kundalini yoga could benefit from the research and work in somatics, functional movement, and a good dose of history, philosophy and ethics of this traditional style of hatha yoga.
Fast forward to 2022 and here we are with a offering of kundalini yoga teacher training that acknowledges the transgression of the illustrious Yogi Bhajan and honours the practice on a contemplative level, on the level of lived experience.
Our approach is based on direct experience that is recommended by Patanjali in the "Yoga Sutras” and an academic, scientific perspective that is informative and useful as a tool of lifestyle medicine and a foundation course that can lead to a profession as a yoga teacher or as a yoga therapist.
